Review

Confession: I first read The Shadow Prince way back in 2014. My Goodreads rating was four out of five stars. I gushed about the main character and younger, gaga self wanted to wrap him up and keep him for myself.

When I saw the opportunity to review this book for a book tour - five years later - I grabbed it. I wanted to see if I would like it now as I did then.

And you know what? I still do.

Rowan is the prince and heir to the throne of the Fire Court. He spent most of his time in the mortal realm, wary and cautious of his own mother's brutal rule of their kingdom. He dreams of what he could and would do when it's time for him to take the throne. When he is summoned back to the court, he is given the opportunity to take the throne... if he does this one little thing.

Rowan came across as naive to me in the beginning; that, despite what he knew about his mother, he's still holding out the possibility of a good outcome. Alas, life lessons are hard earned and Rowan was forced to open his eyes a little wider and to make a decision that changed everything.

This novella may be short but O'Neale packs one hell of a detailed introduction to the world of Mortal Enchantment. From a glimpse of the intricacies of politics between the courts to a taste of the vivid world of Avalon, The Shadow Prince offers a well-written and intriguing story that leaves one wanting for more.
