Taming Demons for Beginners
The Guild Codex: Demonized #1

Rule one: Don’t look at the demon.

When I arrived at my uncle’s house, I expected my relatives to be like me—outcast sorcerers who don’t practice magic. I was right about the sorcery, but wrong about everything else.

Rule two: Don’t listen to the demon.

My uncle chose a far deadlier power. He calls creatures of darkness into our world, binds them into service contracts, and sells them to the highest bidder. And I’m supposed to act like I don’t know how illegal and dangerous it is.

Rule three: Don’t talk to the demon.

All I had to do was keep my nose out of it. Pretend I didn’t find the summoning circle in the basement. Pretend I didn’t notice the shadowy being trapped inside it. Pretend I didn’t break the rules.

But I did, and now it’s too late.

Robin Page lives in uncertainty and cautiousness at her uncle's house. If she have any other choice, she wouldn't be there. But her uncle is not giving her her parents' inheritance as per her rights; and she needs to find her family's grimoire - the only one who has all the names of the 12 Demon Houses.

Not that she knows anything to do with demons and summoning, and her parents always said to stay away from magic. She just needs to overcome her innate shyness and avoidance of confrontations to demand ask her uncle for all of her due then she could be on her merry way.

Until she eavesdropped on her uncle and his colleague at the library and caught a glimpse of a demon summoning circle... She may be attention-shy, but her mother was always exasperated with her curiosity and impulsiveness. Which may be her own downfall, not even her own freshly-baked gooey chocolate-chip cookies could help her.

Then again, they just might.

Robin is not your typical BAMF heroine in an urban fantasy, but she endeared herself to me. Because under all that meekness is a girl with a heart of gold and a hidden courage - enough to see the difference between what is right and what is easy. She has her flaws and she made mistakes. However, these traits allowed me to begin the journey with her character and her narrative and to eagerly anticipate how she will evolve throughout the series.

In this second series in the Guild Codex world, Annette Marie shines a spotlight on another aspect of this immersive world: this time focusing on demons. World-building is, as always, on point.

The overall plot narrative may not be smooth sailing, but it introduced a lot of side-plot tendrils that have potential to create an action-packed series to be followed.

About the Author

Annette Marie is the author of Amazon best-selling YA urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, its prequel trilogy Spell Weaver, and romantic fantasy trilogy Red Winter. Her first love is fantasy, but fast-paced adventures and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it's not quite that bad) with her husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.
