When I was in sixth grade, I had this book, House of Whispers by R.L. Stine. It was good. Of course the entire class borrowed from. It changed hands so frequently that I didn't know who was in possession for most of the time. In one instance when it was returned to me, it had ink that blotted the whole first few pages.  The culprit apologized and I said it was okay but inside was like WHAT DID YOU DO!?! It was borrowed again.
That book was never returned me after that nor I know of its eventual fate. When I saw this book, Witchwood Estate, it reminded me bit of that book. Let's see if anyone spills ink on it.
