As Farhan (R. Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi) search the valleys for their missing friend Rancho (Aamir Khan), their memories drift back to the days when they we're all college roommates, and Rancho incurred the wrath of their headstrong dean Viru Sahastrabudhhe (aka Virus) (Boman Irani) by daring to propose radical theories that directly contradicted his teacher's lessons. Later, Rancho begins dating Virus' daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor), and gradually begins to gain the dean's respect. Flashing back to the present day, Farhan and Raju uncover some previously unknown facts about their old friend that leads them to question everything they ever thought they knew about him.
I’ve never watched any Bollywood movies before. Oh, I’ve seen snippets when I was channel-surfing and happen to pass Star India but I’ve never had any interest in them since I don’t understand Hindi and that these Bollywood productions tend to have a lot of song-and-dance productions inserted somewhere in a movie. So when a friend loaned me a copy of 3 Idiots and told me that it’s worth an afternoon, I just shrugged and thanked her.
The following day, that fateful day last summer, I was bored playing Dragon Age 2 and I wasn’t in any mood to read. I happened to glance at this Indian movie and thought What the heck? Might as well try it. And the rest, as they say, is history. I’ve never had an enjoyable afternoon watching a movie (yes, hose Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings marathon sessions included) and those almost three hours of movie watching was truly worth it.
I initially thought that 3 idiots would be this humdrum comedy film with a lot of slapstick humor and not much of a plot. A mindless watch I would say – nothing to go on at all. After all, the word “Idiots” screams a floating plot. You see, although comedy films abound I am getting tired of them. Actually, I’m tired of them since everything is the same over and over again no matter how you change the actors and the titles of the movies. Same, same, same.
Alright, back to 3 Idiots.
First of all, thank God there were subtitles –even the song numbers because although I greatly admire the cinematography, locations and camera angles included, I would not enjoy the movie as much as I did when there were no subtitles because 90% of what makes 3 Idiots so great were within the dialogues.
Second, I saw another face of India. As I said before, I’ve never watched any Indian movie before and the videos that I have watched of India portrayed the country as a land of squatters, poverty and squalor, dirt and overpopulation. Go figure. So I was pleasantly surprised at those spectacular places and sceneries that the movie featured. I actually Googled that lake in the end and the locations where they filmed because one day I would visit them.
Third, the actors. OH MY GOD. They were brilliant. Super-duper brilliant and super funny without even trying. Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi - the three idiots - delivered flawlessly. I was not disappointed with their portrayals at all. But to me the one who's at the pinnacle of funny was Omi Vaidya... Silencer, I salute you for the last part of your speech:
