first book in The Immortal Archives
Devon Ashley
Normally, the school creates the hunters - not the monsters. Abby Sorrensten likes to play rough. Ripping the horns off the foreheads of demons, manipulating lightning and setting things on fire with the flick of your wrist can give you a serious rush. So she probably wasn’t the best choice for the Order’s experimental training program. Thirteen years of isolation, lack of affection and a bruised and broken body from horrendous training sessions creates more than just an exceptional fighter. It creates an evil within - an evil responsible for several deaths the night she left. Two hundred years later Abby resurfaces as the very thing the Order trained her to kill: a vampire. A mythical demon has set his sights on the school and only the ordained hunter has the powers to face it. Unbeknownst to the Order, Abby’s their precious ordained one and their only chance for survival. As much as she would love to leave them hanging, she’s not willing to risk the life of Emily, a fellow friend and hunter also fed up with the organization. But for Abby, locking herself away in a fortress with angry descendents of those she killed causes suspicions and tensions to run high. Abby must learn the demon’s weaknesses for battle before the Order learns hers.
The story started smack down in the middle of everything. Okay, not really in the middle... middle but what I mean is that unlike other books I've read, Ordained didn't start from the beginning when it all began. Action right from the start with tantalizing backflashes to whet your appetite. It got a lot more interesting when Abby and Noel entered the scene.
What I liked about Abby is not despite how powerful she is there are many aspects of her life that made her imperfect and vulnerable and that is what makes her a very good character in my own opinion. She may look and sound cocky and act uber cool but behind it all you could see that she is struggling that despite being a hunter, a witch and a vampire she is still "human" enough that the readers would connect to her.
Abby's fiery and impatient nature is balanced out by her husband, Noel's cool and calm countenance. Well, he's about as cool and calm as he gets not until Abby's life is at stake, when that happens, all bets are off.
It comes as somewhat of a breather that the main couple are already married here. It gave me a break from the constantly rolling my eyes at the hormone-induced romantic shenanigans done by characters in their teens. As you can surmise, most of the characters here in Ordained are between the ages 20-25 with *cough* one or two beyond the usual.
Another thing that I approve of with this books is that it does not follow only one character's point of view but five POVs. This ensures that you could look at the story from different angles, different minds and perceptions that would enable you to better weave the story together plus it made certain that some characters are not wholly neglected much.
Finally, the mythology in the world of Ordained would keep you on edge, in suspense and excitement.
