Clarity
the first book in the Clarity series
by Kim Harrington
ISBN: 0545230500

Synopsis from Goodreads:

When you can see things others can't, where do you look for the truth?

This paranormal murder mystery will have teens reading on the edge of their seats.

Clarity "Clare" Fern sees things. Things no one else can see. Things like stolen kisses and long-buried secrets. All she has to do is touch a certain object, and the visions come to her. It's a gift.
And a curse.
When a teenage girl is found murdered, Clare's ex-boyfriend wants her to help solve the case - but Clare is still furious at the cheating jerk. Then Clare's brother - who has supernatural gifts of his own - becomes the prime suspect, and Clare can no longer look away. Teaming up with Gabriel, the smoldering son of the new detective, Clare must venture into the depths of fear, revenge, and lust in order to track the killer. But will her sight fail her just when she needs it most?

I really had fun reading it, surprisingly enough. After a slew of reads that I did not particularly like, I had set my expectations low for Clarity despite my love of mysteries.  But I did enjoy it and I loved it!   I had fun solving the case with Clarity, following it from her perspective. The story was really, really straightforward, right down to business.

I liked how the paranormal and the "normal" elements were melded together to create a cohesive narrative that is something anyone can enjoy.  But I have to admit it did remind me of Meg Cabot's 1-800-Where-R-U series and Alane Ferguson's Forensic Mystery series (which I both love).  Nonetheless, Clarity can stand on its own and with that tantalizing psychic reading that Clarity got in the end, I would definitely read the sequel.

  1. Great! I'm so glad you did enjoy this one! I find that detective/thriller stories sometimes are better off with a straight storyline - maybe they're easier for us reader to predict, but that also tends to guarantee that the author kept the story straight while writing it!

I hadn't realized that this was a series, though. I wonder what will the next title bring...? Will it make the story deeper and more complicated, do you think?

Thanks for sharing your thougths on this one!
