Genre: YA Fantasy
Lost in a world full of monstrous fairies, a troubled sixteen year old has to find out who she is and why her memories were stolen before she is found by those who want her dead. She takes the name "Memory" and knows she has just one goal - to find her way home, wherever that is. But this land is strange. No technology to be seen, and iron is banned, thanks to a pact the humans have with the magical creatures who share their pre-industrial era world. In her t-shirt and torn jeans, Memory knows she's different, even before she performs impossible magic.Haunted by her past, chased by a dragon, wanted by the king and stalked by the strange, handsome savage that seems to know her, everyone is after Memory, and she suspects it's not just for her eye-catching outfit. Her forgotten past holds dangerous secrets that will challenge everything she believes and risk the lives of everyone she loves.
Imagine yourself being dropped in a world that is not your own. Not the traditional, walk through an enchanted door, dropping but a rather violet one that involves swirling darkness and lots of bumps, bruises and scratches. Oh, did I mention that you won't remember anything about yourself, your past, your life?
The opening pages of Memory's Wake immediately let's you in our main girl's predicament. And although another person, Eloryn, comes to your aid (while she's on the run herself) and gives you a name, you still don't know who you are and why you are there in the first place.
As we join Memory's journey through the land of Avall, we keep guessing what all the hullaballoo about - although it seemed that everything centers around Eloryn - we find out that Memory has an important role after all.
The POVs from different characters give us different angles to the story which helps to unravel the development as we go along the book.
The setting, the characters were vividly described and if it is not enough for you, there are fantastic illustrations spread throughout the book all drawn by the author herself.
I may not like which characters ends up with who, Memory's Wake had adventure, fantasy and action to keep me reading throughout.
