Tournament of Chance
S.G. Rogers
In Tournament of Chance, a hunter’s daughter becomes the spark that ignites a revolution—in time.
When a beautiful commoner enters the Tournament of Chance archery competition, her thwarted victory sparks a revolution in the oppressive kingdom of Destiny. Although Heather never believed the legends about the restoration of Ormaria, after three shape-shifting Ormarian wizards awaken from a long magical slumber, she joins their perilous quest to regain the throne. Heather battles vicious predators and angry trolls to free the wizards’ magic, but at a horrendous cost. She is unexpectedly torn from the arms of the man she loves and hurled back in time to fulfill a prophecy not yet written. The ensuing maelstrom tests Heather’s survival skills, wits, and endurance. Will she become an unwritten footnote in history, or can she trust the magic to lead her back to her one true love?

I wasn't expecting much before I read this book particularly when I read the words beautiful commoner in the book description and mind immediately thought the words: Mary Sue. You all know what that meant especially when you are referring to a character. But then I found out that Heather was not a Mary Sue and this girl could sure kick some serious butt. Not only was she adept at the bow and arrow but she was also very good at throwing knives. After all, she was the daughter of a master weaponsmith. However, I find that aside from her temper and quick judge of character, she is quite without some flaws. And when the other characters were introduced, I found that it was the same for the others - minor to no character development.
Furthermore, there was little description of the world of Tournament of chance - a world-building of sorts where you can read immerse yourself at what the world was all about. It just dove right through to the rebellion.
Dane and Heather's love story... was rather interesting. They hated each others guts when they first met and won't stop bickering with each other. But there was also a palpable tension between them, a spark that lets you know that there was something. *sigh* Yet, I'm sorry to say that it was some case of insta-love. One day, they were at each other's throats and a few pages later they were declaring there love for one another. *cries* The potential epic romance! As I said, building and development was not really this book's forte.
Nevertheless, I rather liked and enjoyed the story. What the book lacks in development it makes up for in the non-stop action and adventure that surely did make me not put the book, er, laptop down. I would gladly discuss the ending here since I was rather pleased with how Rogers ended the book without creating some sort of time paradox, which is always my question when I am reading a time-travel book, but I would spoil it too much for you.
