Blurb from Goodreads:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men—thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the kings council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Hmmm... A kick-ass heroine. Check. A prince who'd take an interest in her. Check. A trainer who would also take an interest in her. Check. An empire. Check. Something that rests on her shoulders. Check. Well, I could  go on but this book does cover everything.

  1. Ahh! I just can't get over how excited I am for this book! Your check list cracked me up; it was exactly what was going on in my head was I read the premiss.

I have a feeling that reading this is going to inspire in me a desire to learn to be an assassin, the way reading Poison Study irrationally made me want to go around rolling liquids in my mouth like I knew what I was talking about. (Have you read it?)

Thanks for the pick! Happy WoW!

  3. I was so sad when I didn't get approved on Netgalley, haha. But on the other hand: now I can buy this book with the gorgeous cover and read it for the first time after a long wait :D

  7. I wish I had gotten a review copy of this one. Apparently they only give it to USA reviewers. Oh well! Love the cover though. Great pick!
